If your birthday falls between May 21-June 20, then you are the likeable social butterfly that is the Gemini sun sign. These interesting folks are intellectually curious, and love to be around a variety of different types of people. Although sometimes mistakenly described as two-faced (thanks to the twins that are their representation) they are the last kind of person you can expect to have that kind of character trait. Their duality often comes from the fact that they feel at home pursuing all kinds of interests, whether that’s new people, studying different subjects, or learning about new spiritual paths.
The Gemini tarot card is represented by the Lovers, which is the sixth card in the major arcana. But how does this card relate to Geminis, and what kind of symbols tie this astrological sign to this particular tarot card? Glad you asked, because in today’s tarot topic we’re discussing:
Geminis are an air sign that’s ruled by the planet Mercury, so it’s no surprise that they always seem to have something to say—and that they say it well! Known for their wit and keen observation skills, Geminis love speaking to people about anything and everything, and since they’re often involved with a variety of interesting things going on in their life, they always have something to say. Thanks to their familiarity with different subjects, Geminis find it easy to adapt to different situations, whether that’s getting to know strangers at parties, or enjoying the company of their besties.
These folks aren’t afraid to try new things, and they typically pride themselves on having an open mind and being ready for anything. There’s not a lot that can surprise a Gemini when they’re looking for life to surprise them along the way! It’s easy for them to see both sides of the story (not unlike another air sign, Libra) and although they may have an opinion, they understand that others have different experiences and can draw their own conclusions.
Geminis like to be stimulated, and sometimes it may appear that their mind and energy is constantly going. This is why when it comes to partners, they may be best suited matched with other air signs or fire signs.
When the Lovers card comes up in a reading, you know that there is some choice or decision to be made. This does not necessarily mean that it is choosing between two people, and the choice might not even be about romantic love at all. While it can, more often than not when the Lovers comes up in a reading, it is referring to the relationship you have with yourself. It is reassuring to know that no matter the choice you’re going to make, that the overarching theme is that love will always win and will always heal. The man and the woman, the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge—they’re all presented as dualities here, with the angel Raphael presiding over it all.
Both sides of the card deal with opposites, and demonstrate that we all have a choice. The goal of any decision should be to bring more balance to yourself and to your life. It also points out that there are two parts to every person required to make them complete, and that no one exists without their opposite. Knowing all this makes it easy to see when this is the Gemini tarot card!
Now that we know a little more about some of the general themes of the Lovers card, let’s see how it connects to the Gemini sign.
“...the rational mind cannot reach a higher state unless it travels through feelings.”
The mountain appears to reach towards the higher self (the angel), which mirrors our journey through rationality and feelings to reach the divine.
In addition to the Lovers card, Gemini is also closely associated with the Magician. This is the first numbered card in the deck, and it falls under the air sign as well and is ruled by the planet Mercury. This card is all about confidently starting something, and believing you have all the tools necessary to complete the job. Geminis are known for their desire to keep learning new things, although they don’t always have the best follow through. A lot of the time they lose interest and may move on to something else. Planning to start something is quite different than actually starting it, which plays into the Gemini quality of being excellent planners (thanks Mercury!) but needing the push and the drive to stick with it.
The suit of swords is ruled by air, making this a good choice for another Gemini-related card. The rush and exhilaration you can gather from this card is a very Gemini thing to do, especially if they quickly act on instinct. Geminis are often bold people who aren’t afraid to go out and get what they want, however this can sometimes lead to poor decisions and taking risks. Although they are excellent planners, if Geminis decide to skip this phase, they could find themselves rushing into a situation without seeing all perspectives (like the Lovers card urges them to do) and ending up in a less than ideal situation.
If you want to start building better relationships with the cards associated with your sun sign, there are lots of ways you can include them in your practice.
Geminis are closely associated with the sixth card in the major arcana, the Lovers. And while it’s easy to assume this card is about external love, it is really about knowing all parts of yourself, and loving them equally. After all, as the card instructs, this is the best way to be in touch with the highest version of ourselves.
