The penultimate sign in the zodiac is Aquarius, and if this is your sun sign, it means you were born between January 21 and February 19th. The symbol for Aquarius is the water-bearer and it is a fixed air sign ruled by the planet Uranus. Aquarians truly march the beat of their own drum, and they’re known as one of the most eccentric (and fun-loving) signs in the zodiac. This could be due to the fact that their ruling planet is the only one in our solar system to rotate on its side, ensuring these folks definitely look at the world a little differently (but in a good way!).

These original people are most at home fulfilling their love of intellectual stimulation, pursuing cultural activities like art or music, or standing up for causes they deeply believe in. Aquarians are progressive thinkers, and tend to be optimistic, which is why the 17th card in the major arcana, the Star, is the perfect fit to represent their sign.

How Aquarius relates to the Star

Why the Star fits perfectly with the inherent nature of Aquarians

The Star offers a message of hope and faith, and this optimism is inherent in many Aquarians. Image courtesy of Labyrinthos.

The Star is at home in the skies, and fits it perfectly as one of the air tarot cards, like its zodiac counterpart. In most decks, it focuses on two of the outstanding qualities of Aquarians, their ability to dream big and imagine a better world (air), and the ability to balance that with the emotional intelligence to get things done (water). The zodiac symbol of the waterbearer is very evident here with a figure pouring water from cups (more on that symbolism later). The card illustrates a lot of what Aquarians find appealing, which is the uniting of energies to get something accomplished, being optimistic that things can get better, and that there are always new opportunities to learn something new or help others on their journey.

The Star is all about learning to see the positive in life, and knowing that what you have is more than enough to make a difference. The figure in the card doesn’t appear to have a lot in their containers, but you can be willing to bet that like an Aquarian, they’re ready to give out whatever they do have to advance a cause or to help people who need advice. This sense of knowing exactly where their morals are and what causes are important to them fit with the figure in the Star who is, at least in the RWS deck, naked. Aquarians are unafraid to show their true self, and have no time for people who put on airs or pretend to be something they’re not.

We know that stars are lightyears away, and we observe them from our own far away angle down here on earth. Aquarians can also seem to be distant sometimes, or aloof, usually because they tend to live in their own minds a lot. Just because they might be thinking of something else, doesn’t mean they don’t care about what’s happening in front of them. Their aloofness doesn’t come from snobbery, but rather from an endlessly inquisitive mind that yearns to learn (and sometimes daydream) about everything that’s possible.

Stars can also be great guides, whether it was the ancient navigators of the sea, or when you need to find your way when you’re lost. Aquarians are great at giving advice, and if you feel lost or unsure, they are always more than willing to help you navigate through life’s problems. Just make sure you’re prepared for upfront advice, as this star sign will not sugar coat what they have to say!

Aquarian symbolism in the Star

What images in the Star card point to in the Aquarius sign

Although there are lots of different interpretations of the Star tarot card, we’re going to be discussing the RWS symbolism and how it relates to the Aquarius star sign.

  • Two elements. Although it is solidly an air sign, both Aquarius tarot card and Aquarian signs have definite watery vibes as well. The air part of this sign refers to their intellectual curiosity, and how Aquarians love to be stimulated by new ideas and learning. They also find it easy to talk to people, and oftentimes have lots of different friend groups that they like to split their time with.

The water element is also well-presented in the Star card, as the figure is depicted pouring water from two containers, one onto the land and one into the pond. In this way they are nourishing all aspects of themselves. The figure also has one foot in the pond and one on land symbolising the need to keep yourself grounded, but also open to trusting your intuition.

  • Naked figure. The figure in the RWS deck is unclothed, which means they are unafraid to show their true self to the world, no matter what other people may think (who cares!) This confident attitude is very characteristic of Aquarians, and they don’t give a hoot what someone else thinks, they’re going to trust their guts and follow the path that’s right for them—not what other people tell them to do.

Being unclothed also means Aquarians consider themselves life-long learners, always looking at things through the lens of a beginner. We all have to start somewhere, and humbly acknowledging they’re okay with not being an expert is why they find new experiences so enriching.

  • Pouring cups. The figure pours from two cups, one on the land to keep themselves grounded, and one in the pond to stimulate their emotional intelligence. Aquarians want to nurture these two aspects of themselves, ones that are often at odds.
  • The bird. The bird the tree is in reference to the ibis of thought, which correlates with the Aquarian need to never stop learning—always expanding their intellectual horizons.
  • Stars in the sky. The large star in the center illustrates how Aquarians follow their own intuition and create a path for themselves that rings true for them. They will always take helpful advice, however, but only if it aligns with their goals.

There are other tarot cards that have Aquarian vibes!

In addition to the Star, there are other Aquarius tarot cards that you should be aware of! Image courtesy of Arcane Alchemy.

The Fool is another card in the major arcana that is associated with air energy of Aquarius. The figure seems to be so enthralled with living life to the fullest, they don’t see the potential danger of the cliff ahead! The same can be said for a lot of Aquarians, they tend to live in their heads and are focused on living each moment to the max. While this may seem short sighted, it allows those born under this sign experience all that life has to offer, without worrying about the future or fretting over the past.

The Page of Swords is another card that resonates strongly with Aquarians. The figure in this card is ready to go out and experience all the world has to offer. They are moving forward, but also acknowledging where they’ve come from in the past. For Aquarians this resonates deeply, as they know that in life you have to keep going, but it’s also about learning from your past so you can grow into the best version of yourself.

What the Star could mean to an Aquarius in a reading

If the Star comes up during a reading, this is always a welcomed sign. It means that you are on the right path, and following your intuition will help you achieve your dreams. The Star also alludes to a renewed sense of hope, and that you should be optimistic about the future. You have all you need to thrive already with you, you just need the courage to believe that’s true.

The Star in a love reading signifies that there is lots of hope and love in the future. Optimism is a powerful magnet, and people want to be around folks who exude this type of energy. If you happen to be in a rough spot with your partner, if the Star appears it signals that healing is taking place, and the future will be brighter.

When it comes to a career reading, seeing the Star appear means that having faith that you will find a better job (or be fulfilled at your current one) will be realized. It urges you to stay positive and optimistic even though it may be difficult.
