What is Numerology?

Numerology is an ancient practice making a comeback today. Born from the philosophy of Pythagoras, numerology holds that every number we know makes a unique vibration in the world and has its own meaning and set of characteristics.

By studying numbers – specifically those root numbers that make up everything else (1-9) – we can learn a lot about the world and ourselves. Some things that can be ascertained with numerology are:

  • Your Personality
  • Your Life Path
  • Your Relationships
  • Your Strengths and Weaknesses
  • Your Career Fits
  • Your Future Self

How Can I Use Numerology?

If the practice of numerology intrigues you, read on! There are 5 core numbers in Pythagorean numerology, each derived in a different way and each telling you a different thing about yourself. The goal is to find a single digit (or a master number like 11, 22, or 33) for each of the core numbers. Depending on what you get, that tells you something about that phase of your life.

Numerology boils down 5 key areas of life into a single digit that tells you about yourself.

The 5 core numbers are:

  • Life Path Number

This is the most important number in Pythagorean numerology. This digit, once found, provides you with a roadmap for your life.

Your life path is calculated using your birthday. Take July 4, 1776 as an example. You isolate each of the month, day, and year into a single digit. July is month 7, the day is 4, and the year is 1 + 7 + 7 + 6 which equals 21, or 2 + 1, which is 3. Then you add the three numbers: 7 + 4 + 3 = 14, or 1 + 4 = 5. This life path number would be 5. Always reduce to a single digit unless you have a master number.

  • Expression Number

This number tells you about your strengths and your weaknesses, and how to focus your energy for self-improvement.

You calculate your expression number using the name on your birth certificate. Each letter in the alphabet corresponds to an integer 1-9. A = 1, B = 2, and so on until you reach 9, in which case it recycles back to 1. Using that method, you can turn your birth name into integers, add them together, and find a single expression number!

  • Heart’s Desire Number

Your heart’s desire number tells you the why behind the what. It explains the reasons you do things. It finds what you truly desire.

You can derive this by using the same alphabet to integer transfer as before, but this time with only the vowels in your given name.

  • Personality Number

This number tells you what personality, or mask, you put on for people. While this number doesn’t pierce into the core of who you are, it can tell you what front you put up, and how you live your day to day life.

The personality number is calculated the same way as the heart’s desire number, but this time by using the consonants in your given name instead of the vowels.

  • Birth Day Number

This is the simplest and least influential of the 5 core numbers. Your birth day number only looks at, well, the number of the day you were born! No further calculation required. This number can tell you a single talent or trait that will become important during your life.

Once you find your number for each of these, you’re probably wondering what that means for you. In this article, we’ll be exploring everything to do with the number 1!

Numerology of 1

1 is the first integer, the first number we count to on our fingers, the first in almost every series. As such, 1 in numerology represents new beginnings. It is a leader, a driving force, and a representation of possibility. 1 symbolizes confidence, power, and action, and we need the 1 to remind ourselves to push ahead in life.

According to numerology.com, some traits of a 1 are:

  • Independent
  • Ambitious
  • Proactive
  • Pioneering
  • Innovative
  • Self-centered
  • Uninhibited
  • Reckless
  • Motivated
  • Freedom-loving

Strengths

The number 1 is self-sufficient and self-willed. People with this number are independent and don’t rely on other people to get things done. They are optimistic, determined, and firm self-starters. They’re flexible and don’t get stuck in the mud – they choose a plan and they run with it.

This helps them achieve their goals quickly, and even without the help of others. When they do hit stumbling blocks, they figure out the smartest and best ways to get them out of the way.

Weaknesses

A lot of these strengths can become weaknesses when pushed too far. A 1’s self reliance can become toxic when they always refuse help and choose to see other people as obstacles instead of help. They can be overly-domineering and push others too hard. Their fear of failure can also become overwhelming and make it difficult to finish a project.

Life Path Number 1

Those with a number 1 for their life path exhibit all the traits described above. They are visionary leaders and best suited for jobs where they work alone or are in charge. Some of the best entrepreneurs are number 1’s.

This self-starter attitude can make it difficult for 1’s in relationships. While they’re not afraid to ask for what they want and ply the object of their affection with attention, other people can find them disengaged because they’re more interested in their own goals. If that can be worked past, however, 1’s are loyal and attentive partners.

A big roadblock for life path number 1’s is self-doubt. Living on the edge and working toward a unique vision makes 1’s ripe for uncertainty, but if they learn to trust themselves, they can find greater fulfillment. 1’s also need to learn when to take a break!

Self-doubt is something that 1’s need to learn to overcome to live their best life.

Expression Number 1

People with an expression number 1 are usually leaders in a group and like to take a dominant role in things. They are driven, passionate, honest people who don’t take a backseat for anybody.

If 1 is your expression number, you’ll find yourself most fulfilled when you take on bold, innovative projects. You excel in leadership positions because you’re a creative problem solver and know how to handle authority.

Heart’s Desire Number 1

People with the Heart’s Desire, or Soul Urge, number 1 feel the keen need to be their own authentic individuals. They are born leaders, not followers, and are willing to make difficult decisions that others aren’t.

People with this heart’s desire number need to learn to balance confidence and arrogance in order to be more effective. They are extremely competitive, and need to let go of that desire at times if they want to get along with others.

Personality Number 1

Those with this personality number are very visible. Their strong will and leadership, combined with their natural empathy, make them extremely charming and charismatic. 1’s are potent personalities, and everyone notices when they enter or leave a room

There is a duality to 1’s. They are self-assured and exhibit dominant behavior. However, they also are scared to mess up and show their real selves to others. Vulnerability scares them. 1’s have strong opinions, and sometimes that means other people don’t want to say anything around them to upset or contradict them.

People with personality number 1 bring life to conversation and are harbingers of brilliant ideas, but they need to remember that other people might be right, not just them. They also need to learn to be vulnerable, because that is ultimately how they’re going to enjoy their relationships the most.

Birth Date Number 1

1’s in the Birth Date number are pioneers and initiators. Routine frustrates people with this birth date number. They want to push the boundaries and take calculated risks. Their will power is strong, and they have the opportunity to do great things.
