Friendships can be complicated. We all have those friendships in our lives that go off without a hitch most of the time, but we also all have some that just… don’t. People that we care about, but clash with more often than with others. And that can be painful.
With difficult friendships and relationships, it’s always a good idea to try and figure out where you and your friend are disconnecting-- to try and work past your obstacles and grow as friends. Although there are lots of factors to take into account where your friendships are concerned, lots of people find that your Zodiac sign may shed some light on what kinds of people you have a harder time getting along with and why.
Here, we’ve compiled a list of Zodiac signs that often struggle to get along with each other and why. There’s always variation, of course, but it can be helpful to see which of your traits might clash with those of your friends-- this can provide plenty of opportunity for growth in your relationships.
Aries and Cancer often start out with rocky or uncomfortable friendships, largely because they communicate in such different ways. Aries tends to be confident and bold, eager to act, which puts them at odds with Cancer, who is quieter, more introspective and sentimental, and slower to act. This can lead to friction as Aries pushes Cancer too far out of their comfort zone and Cancer gets defensive in response.
There are ways to get around this, though, and once they do, Aries and Cancer can have a deeply fulfilling friendship. Usually, Aries has to back off for a while in order to allow Cancer to get comfortable-- stop pushing their boundaries and try not to inadvertently offend their sensibilities. Once Cancer is comfortable, their communication with Aries becomes a lot healthier, with Aries slowly helping Cancer out of their shell and Cancer helping Aries slow down and think things through before acting.
Taurus and Leo can actually have very strong friendships, thanks to their mutual dependability in the long run. But they can sometimes clash. Leo loves attention, for example, while Taurus tends to be well-grounded. Leo’s need for attention can therefore look shallow to a Taurian who doesn’t know them well enough yet. Both signs are also strong-willed and enjoy fighting from time to time, which can lead to arguments.
However, this pairing has a good chance of lasting as a friendship for a long time as long as both parties are careful with how much they butt heads and try to understand the other. Both Taurus and Leo are good about seeing the big picture, and as an earth sign and a fire sign, respectively, this pairing has the determination and passion to accomplish their goals together.
Gemini and Scorpio, as an air and water sign, respectively, may have some real hurdles to building a strong friendship with each other. Scorpio is a stable, dependable sign who takes relationships seriously and doesn’t plan on letting friends go. This can make a friendship with Gemini-- who can sometimes be flighty-- difficult. Communication can also be hard sometimes, since Gemini can move from interest to interest quickly while Scorpio likes to fully explore a topic or hobby before moving on-- so Gemini can seem disinterested while Scorpio comes across as obsessive.
But these two signs are good for each other insofar as they both love intellectual stimulation. If they manage to get past their differences and figure out how to interact with each other, Gemini and Scorpio can have a great and intellectually fulfilling friendship.

Libra and Capricorn are opposites in almost every way, as air and earth signs, respectively, and this can create lots of obstacles in their friendships with each other. Libra is lighthearted, social, and diplomatic, which contrasts quite a bit with Capricorn’s down-to-earth ambition and drive to push ahead and accomplish their goals themselves. Capricorn also likes following concrete plans, while Libra tends to be indecisive, and Libra can easily get frustrated with Capricorn’s pessimistic attitude-- which can cause lots of tension between these two.
Once they get past the point of figuring out the power dynamics of their friendship-- both signs have strong leadership tendencies-- Libra and Capricorn can be very productive together. The strongest friendships between these two signs usually appear when they share similar goals in life-- this allows them to navigate through their different approaches to leadership and move ahead as a team.
Gemini’s spontaneity and Virgo’s need for control and detail make relationships between these two signs difficult to begin with. Gemini, as an air sign, likes to go with the flow, and Virgo’s love of control as an earth sign who doesn’t like change can interfere with that a lot. The problem between these two tends to lie in how they communicate-- Virgo can come across as pessimistic to Gemini, and Gemini’s propensity to chat about a variety of topics, one after the other, is often overwhelming to Virgo.
Over time, though, these two signs can be really close friends. As mutable signs, they are both great at teamwork, and when they have a common goal and have figured out how to communicate in a productive way, they can achieve great things.
Similar to Gemini, Sagittarius likes to be spontaneous and go with the flow. This often makes it difficult for them to get along with Virgos, who prefer to be down-to-earth, cautious, and stick with concrete plans instead of making things up as they go. Until Virgos figure out how to relax around Sagittarians, this friendship will likely be frustrating for both parties.
When Sagittarians get the space to indulge in their spontaneity, though, this friendship usually becomes a productive and balanced one as both parties start to rub off on each other. Eventually, Sagittarians will incorporate Virgo’s advice and wisdom into their plans, making them more productive as a team.
Leo, as the leader of the Zodiac, loves attention-- and this can really clash with Scorpios, who tend to be private but just as intense as Leos. Both signs are charismatic and good at getting what they want, which can lead to some intense arguments that interfere with the development of a healthy friendship.
That friendship becomes much stronger and much healthier if they acknowledge and respect each other’s needs-- if Scorpio allows Leo to have the spotlight, and Leo allows Scorpio to be more private. Both signs are also very dependable and loyal in friendships, so once they have an understanding of each other, they can have a mutually beneficial and healthy friendship.
Aquarians and Taurians are about as different as two people can be. Besides both being stubborn, they view the world very differently-- Aquarius is free-spirited and always interested in moving forward and making positive changes in the world, while Taurus doesn’t like change, likes to live in the present, and is more comfortable with the status quo. The difference in viewpoint can make it difficult for them to understand each other, which usually just means that a close friendship doesn’t develop.
Building a friendship between these two signs takes a lot of patience-- they just usually don’t end up having the same needs, and so they don’t actually spend a lot of time around each other. It is possible for them to get along and be friendly, though, as long as they keep each other’s needs in mind and respect them.
These two signs actually tend to have fulfilling friendships overall, but it’s certainly not a smooth road. Pisces tends to be attentive to emotion, while Aquarius isn’t usually all that interested in providing emotional support-- and this can cause lots of problems as Pisces has to turn elsewhere for the emotional support they need.
On the bright side, though, both of these signs usually want to learn about people who are different from them, and they can grow to be good friends once they each understand how the other thinks. Both are creative and energetic, so once they get past their differences, they can have lots of fun together.
